Journal and remark book of Lt. James B. Hay [manuscript]. 1880-1883.

The 'Journal and remark book for the use of the officers of HM Navy', written and illustrated by Lieut. James B. Hay details his duties and experiences on British naval ships. They include 'HMS Raleigh' from Madiera to Simon's Bay and Sydney via the Amsterdam Islands during April to June 1880; voyages on 'HMS Emerald' from July 1880 from Sydney to ports including Melbourne, Norfolk Island, the Solomon Islands, Suva, Fiji, Samoa, Falkland Islands, Antigua, Marshall Islands, Auckland and Wellington. He sailed on 'HMS Garnet' in 1882 and the 'Duke of Wellington' in 1883. Lt. Hay's record of service on 'HMS Emerald' from December 1880 provides a first hand insight into atrocities committed against British sailors by some of the inhabitants of the Solomon Islands and proceedings taken against them. A pamphlet entitled 'HMS Sandfly', and a newspaper article provide further details.
